Shona Art
![]()
Zimports carries Shona
sculptures from a variety of Zimbabwean artists. These talented, self-taught men and women
are struggling to get by due to the hard economic times in Zimbabwe. We are helping
improve living conditions for these men and women by providing them a stable source of
income with a fair and consistent market for their work.

Shona sculpture is a contemporary art form, which became a major art movement in the 1950's. The art community was surprised to find such exquisite sculptures coming from artists with no formal training. Artists rarely carve with a pre-conceived idea. They let the stone dictate what form is held within it. Every sculpture therefore is unique. Using only handtools , artists carve their works of art from serpentine, opalstone, verdite, leopard rock, and steatite.
Zimports also carries sadza batiks. This is a popular method used in Zimbabwe for making unique and beautiful wall hangings, pillow cases, and tablecloths. These fabrics, like the sculptures, are also handmade, therefore, no two will be exactly the same.
Please browse through our site and enjoy the
creative art of Zimbabwe.
