Edias Muromba Biography
Edias Muromba was born in Murehwa, Zimbabwe in
1973. "I did my primary education at Chikuhwa School and later transferred to Harare
to do my secondary education in Zengeza No. 3 High School. It was then in Harare where I
met my uncle Moses Masaya, who was already in this field of Shona stone sculpture since
the early 1970's. At first I didn't know anything about stone carving; it was then from
frequent visits I made to my uncles home that I developed an interest in this art through
seeing his woks which to me remained a mystery. They were good sculptures with powerful
meaning in them. He inspired me a lot and I always joined him during weekends washing up
his sculptures. Unfortunately he died when I was still learning and it was a big blow to
me.I thought I could not do anything without him and I quit the art. Two years later,
early 1997, I decided to try once more. The results were fantastic using experience I got
from my uncle. Now I am a full time artist and my sculptures touch every aspect of
life, be it social, economical or anything that has to do with life in general. My works
are a combination of Masaya's teachings and my own experience, traditional life and
beliefs of my culture. I live with my wife and our child Tatenda. I'm also looking after
my mother and three brothers. I would like to complement people who buy my sculptures.
Your support is great and I will continue to carve and share my culture and personal
experience through stone art."
