Fabric Design Techniques
Sadza Batik
Sadza, a staple of the Zimbabwean diet,
is maize (corn) ground into a fine meal, which is cooked with water until it has the
consistency of mashed potatoes. Sadza, often eaten plain, may be served with meat or
vegetables for a little added taste!
Sadza paste is used to draw designs onto fabrics making Sadza Batik! The paste, where applied, prevents paint from adhering to the fabric. The paint is then set by wrapping the fabric in foil and placing in an oven for 15 minutes. Once cooled, the fabric is washed, hung out to dry and ready for use!
Potato Print
Designs are carved into a
potato and then used as a stamp. The carved potato is dipped into paint and then applied
to the fabric creating a beautifully designed fabric.
