Picket Mazhindu Biography
Picket Mazhindu was born on the 17th of November, 1973 in Salisbury, Rhodesia, now known as Harare, Zimbabwe. "I come from Chihota communal lands in Marondera. I am of the Shona tribe. I did my primary and secondary education at St. Hugh's School in Seke and finished in 1991."
"I started sculpting in primary school. I was interested in drawing until the year 1996 and that's when I really started learning stone carving. Truly, I had fond love of sculpting, but the inspiration came from the work of my cousin and also my ancestral spirit beliefs. Although my cousin taught me up to the time I started mastering, I went to Kwekwe craft centre where I learned visual arts such as creations, abstracts and fine art. The course took six years full time. In 1996 I had a certificate in Arts of Sculpting. In 1997 I opened up and operated a workshop in Chitungwiza which I am still working from. I'm permanent in that town and a well established artist. I taught other young artists who are now working on their own and living through art.
My works have been exhibited in many countries such as Britain, Cuba, U.S.A., Germany, Denmark, Venezuela, Italy, France and Zimbabwe.I also exhibit extensively in all galleries in my country like the National Gallery, Pierre Gallery, Stone Heritage, etc.
I will keep on teaching about my culture and my abilities through stone sculpture. I am married and have a son named Danzel, the artist of tomorrow."
