Shona Art
Edward Rumano's Autobiography
![]()
Born on the 20th of August in 1972 in Murewa,
Zimbabwe. I grew up at Mukarakate village, did my primary school at Jekura Primary and my
"O" level at Nhowe Mission School in Murewa.
At first my ambition was to become a teacher, but through the frustrations I faced I abandoned it and ventured into stone carving. I grew up in a family of artists. To our family it's an ancestral inheritance. My great grandfathers used to carve all sorts of different traditional artifacts like home ornaments, hardware tools, etc. Presently my father does these things. My brother, Gilbert is one of the acclaimed upcoming artists of the second generation because of his unique works.
Myself, seeing and admiring all this, I became much interested and started carving in 1994. It wasn't all that much of a problem since I used to carve during my school holidays. I did a couple of pieces which I consigned to the National Art Gallery in Harare and all did well. My works are found in most art galleries in Zimbabwe; National Art Gallery and Zimbabwe Heritage to mention a few.
I work at home, but I sometimes work at Chinembiri Art Centre. I work on different types of stone;verdite, springstone, steatite, serpentine, soapstone and so on. I want to become a renowned artist in Shona sculpture on the world map, to be more creative and produce unique works which will teach and express all my feelings towards humanity at large.
