MASIMBA DIMBWI'S BIOGRAPHY
Masimba began sculpting while still in school. Today, at 25 years of age, he is showing his art at exhibitions in Zimbabwe. Masimba's motto is "Creativity is activity." This becomes obvious when looking at his art work. His work is a reflection of himself, soul, world spirit and family feelings.
Masimba's sculptures often show metamorphoses between humans and animals. His images range from depictions on man and his varied emotions to the creation of abstract forms. Masimba says from art there is a story and from that story he gets the title of his sculpture.
Masimba prefers manual tools because they are easier to control. He is very particular about the stone he uses, "Very hard stone is better", says the sculptor, "Because it doesn't break easily, customers prefer it."
For Masimba, sculpting is a full time commitment. When his sculptures are complete, he heats them against a fire and then melts clear wax on the stone to seal it and give it a shine. Masimba believes local and overseas people should have better access to these Shona sculptures so that they can learn more about art.
